The Cherry Hills Village Police Department is participating in the Blue Envelope Program, an initiative designed to support safe and positive interactions between first responders and community members who may experience communication challenges due to a condition or disability.
The program began in Connecticut in 2020 and has since expanded nationwide, with law enforcement agencies leading the effort. Originally developed to assist officers in recognizing and supporting individuals with autism, it has grown to include anyone whose condition may affect communication during encounters with first responders.
Participants can choose to carry a blue envelope—containing items such as driver’s license, registration, and insurance—or use other indicators like bracelets, keychains, lanyards, or bumper stickers displaying the program logo. These identifiers signal to first responders that alternative communication methods or accommodations may be helpful.
The program is simple, voluntary, and private. No registration is required, and no records are kept. Community members may stop by the Police Department to receive the Blue Envelope or other identifying items—free of charge.
Our Department is proud to offer this service along with police departments in Arapahoe County; including fire districts, county offices, and community service providers. Together, we will distribute the Blue Envelope materials and work hand-in-hand to ensure this program benefits as many people as possible. These items are meant to help all people communicate more effectively with law enforcement agencies.
