As warmer weather approaches, the Bushkill Township Police Department is seeing an increase in electric bicycles (e-bikes) throughout our community. While e-bikes are a great way to get around, unfortunately, officers have observed a rise in unsafe behavior, including riders not wearing helmets, riding where prohibited, operating recklessly, operating in and out of traffic, riding at night without lights, and carrying multiple riders on a single device. These actions significantly increase the risk of serious injury, especially for juveniles who may lack the experience of safely navigating roadways. The Bushkill Township Police Department would like to remind residents of Pennsylvania laws to stay safe and avoid violations.
Under Pennsylvania law, e-bikes that meet specific requirements are treated like bicycles and do not require a license, registration, or insurance in most cases. However, there are certain rules and regulations that riders must follow.
Under Pennsylvania law:
E-bike lighting must be used when operating between sunset and sunrise.
It's also important to note that e-scooters are not permitted on public roads or sidewalks and may only be operated on private property within the Commonwealth.E-scooters are not permitted on public roads or sidewalks and may only be operated on private property within the Commonwealth
Where can and can't you ride?
Riders can operate their e-bikes on roadways and bike lanes, as well as trails where bicycles are permitted. However, some trails may be designated as pedal-assist only, and e-bikes are not allowed in township parks or trails posted "No Bikes" or "No E-bikes."
Due to recent complaints, increased enforcement efforts are occurring, and violations may result in citations. Parents and guardians are encouraged to speak with their children about these laws and ensure proper safety practices are followed, including helmet use and proper lighting. Working together, we can help keep everyone in our community safe.
