In case you didn't know...there is a major winter storm headed our way. Weather forecasters are saying it could be historic. It is expected to arrive sometime early Sunday morning (1/25/2026) and last through Monday (1/26/2026). This includes predicted snowfall between 12-18" and frigid temperatures.
Here are some reminders:
Storm preparations:
- Check that the home heating fuel such as oil or propane is full or enough to last several days.
- Have food including non-perishables available for several days. During the storm is NOT the time for food deliveries.
- Check that you have prescription medications to last several days.
- Have flashlights, batteries and/or candles available in case of power outage.
- Check that your generator is fueled and ready to go. Remember to place it OUTSIDE when in use, away from doors and windows. NEVER use it inside.
- Check that your gas can is full for generator or snowblower refills.
- Avoid any unnecessary travel. This will reduce your chances of being involved in a crash and give the plow trucks time to clear roadways. If you must travel, check 511PA.com or the 511PA app for the latest road and weather conditions. You can also check to see where the plow trucks are in real time and any driving restrictions that are in place. Be sure to have a winter survival kit in your vehicle to include- flash light, batteries, blanket, water, non-perishable snacks, cell phone charger, hat, gloves, shovel, cat litter or sand, medications, items for pets or children, and anything else you think you would need. Should you become stranded in a snow storm, be sure to keep the tailpipe of the vehicle clear, as carbon monoxide can fill a vehicle in minutes and be deadly.
- Call 9-1-1 for any emergencies. Response times may be slower due to weather and road conditions.
After storm cleanup:
- If we get the predicted snow, this is going to be a lot to clean up. Do it in stages. Ask for help shoveling or snow blowing, especially if you are an older adult.
- Dress appropriately to be outside. With frigid temperatures frostbite can occur in minutes.
- Do not shovel, snow blow or plow snow onto the roadway. It creates hazards that can lead to crashes.
- Avoid any unnecessary travel until the roads have been cleared and treated.
