The Williamsport Police Special Response Team
The Special Response Team (SRT) of the Williamsport Police Department is a multi-jurisdictional unit comprised of officers from several law enforcement agencies throughout Lycoming County. The unit also includes Tactical Paramedics employed by UPMC and the Williamsport Bureau of Fire.
SRT’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, executing high-risk search warrants, resolving barricaded subject incidents, providing dignitary protection, and performing other specialized functions beyond the scope of routine police operations. The unit works closely with Crisis Negotiators during hostage situations and is a member of the Northcentral Terrorism Task Force, regularly completing additional training focused on terrorism-related incidents. The Williamsport Police SRT also works in conjunction with Columbia-Montour SWAT during large-scale tactical operations.
Additionally, SRT assists with security during major public events such as Williamsport Welcomes the World, the Major League Classic, and other large gatherings in order to enhance public safety within the community.
SRT maintains strict firearms and physical fitness standards. Once appointed, each member must meet rigorous quarterly firearms qualifications and annual physical fitness requirements. The unit trains together twice each month and regularly participates in tabletop exercises and scenario-based training. Each member performs specialized duties in addition to their regular responsibilities within their respective agencies.
Entry-level requirements for SRT members include a minimum of two years of law enforcement experience, successful completion of stringent physical fitness and firearms qualification standards, and a probationary period during which new members must demonstrate proficiency in tactical operations. Candidates must also be recommended by their supervisors and demonstrate a strong commitment to professionalism, service, and duty.
The unit is supervised by a Team Commander, Team Leader, and Assistant Team Leader. SRT includes members with specialized roles such as Selective Marksmen, Tactical Paramedics, K9 handlers, and drone operators, with other members assigned a variety of operational responsibilities. Each member is committed to the mission of the unit and regularly dedicates significant additional time to specialized training.
