On Monday October 4, 2021, at 12:59 hours NLCRPD was dispatched to contact a subject regarding fraud. Caller explained that he was a commodities broker. Reporting party claimed a potential client intended to purchase $150,000.00 worth of cattle and provided him with a bank letter of credit in the amount of $150,000.00.
The reporting party in turn traveled within the state looking for a pre- specified breed of cattle that the buyer had requested to purchase. After the completion of the purchase the reporting party scheduled for a ground loader cattle truck to load and transport the herd to a destination in New York state. As the cattle were being transported to their destination, it was determined the bank letter of credit from the subject was fraudulent. The reporting party stated he had the truck stop and turn around with the live load and return with the cattle.
The trader stated he has not heard from the purchaser and believed him to have been arrested in New York for fraud. The trader stated he was able to sell back half of the cattle stock he had but was now stuck with the remaining portions of the beef herd and suffered financial loss of thousands of dollars so far to house and feed the remaining cattle stock. Current loss is stated at $15,000.00 and pending bills for the transport, housing, and feed of the cattle have yet to be identified for compilation of the loss.
The NLCRPD Criminal Investigations Unit is assigned this investigation for follow up reporting. Anyone with further information on this crime is requested to contact the NLCRPD administrative offices at 717-733-0965 or via the Crimewatch tip portal.
