NLCRPD Officer Derek Oleszczuk performed lifesaving medical intervention while in an off-duty capacity after witnessing an adult suffer a sudden cardiac event at Vitality Fitness 350 North Reading Road, Ephrata. Derek was working out inside the gym when another patron collapsed because of a suspected cardiac event. Derek along with another patron recognized the issue and immediately started CPR. Derek assisted with placement and operation of an AED and administered several shocks. EMS arrived on scene and continued lifesaving efforts and transported the victim to a local medical facility for hospital-based care. The victim had reportedly regained breathing and a pulse. Due to the quick actions of Officer Derek Oleszczuk and an involved bystander the victim survived this life-threatening event. Congratulations to all for their involvement in this endeavor. The fitness facility should be recognized and commended for having an AED unit readily available for emergency use. Data has proven that the availability of AED devices reduce death from sudden cardiac events and increase the likely survival of such events.
