Manheim Township is a first-class township located in the heart of Lancaster County adjacent to Lancaster City. The Manheim Township Police Department is the second-largest police department in Lancaster County and with service to both Manheim Township and Lancaster Township, combined it handles the largest resident population in the county (larger than Lancaster City, Harrisburg City, and York City). The 65 sworn officers and 17 civilian employees serve over 61,000 residents across 30 square miles, resulting in the highest call volume per officer in the county. Officers handle a wide variety of calls due to the diverse jurisdiction which includes suburban neighborhoods, commercial plazas, several parks, urban settings, an airport, industrial zones, and large stretches of highway. Recent census data shows that Manheim Township continues to grow in population, and several new residential developments and commercial zones contribute to the growth of the community. In response to this development, MTPD continues to add more officers, civilian aids, resources, and equipment. 

Due to the combination of the size, location, and diversity of the jurisdiction, officers of the Manheim Township Police Department have some of the most well-rounded careers available in law enforcement across the country. In addition to the diverse experiences available to an officer on patrol in any of our sectors, there are also many opportunities for growth within the department. Special assignments include K9, Crash Reconstruction Specialist, County S.E.R.T., Hostage Negotiator, Criminal Investigations, Drone Pilot, Drug Recognition Expert, Forensic Specialist, Community Outreach, Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement, Traffic Enforcement Team, School Resource Officers, Bike Patrol, and additional professional development training. MTPD is one of the few departments in the county that regularly hires entry-level applicants and offers a fully-funded academy as well as full pay and benefits for new hires while they train in the academy.
