TRAFFIC SAFETY MESSAGE #24-007
SCHOOL BUS FLASHING LIGHTS
Yellow flashing lights on a school bus mean that the RED lights are about to activate - RED lights, of course, mean STOP. When yellow lights are flashing, the correct course of action is to slow down in anticipation of the red lights/bus stop and then stop for the safety of the children. The INCORRECT course of action is to speed up and fly pass the bus!
NBTPD gave notice prior to the start of this school year that the school buses now have automatic cameras onboard that will record all offending vehicles. NBTPD's Highway Safety Unit will review any videos submitted by the district. If it is determined that you passed a school bus with its RED lights activated, the vehicle owner SHALL receive a citation (PA Vehicle Code §3345.1). This program is just like the red-light cameras or speed cameras deployed by various police departments around the country. However, this specific program is aimed at keeping the school kids safe from inattentive and/or aggressive drivers.
DRIVE SAFELY!
