Traffic Safety Message #26-002
NBTPD would like to remind all pedestrians to stay safe while walking along township roadways.
According to the PA Vehicle Code:
If a sidewalk is available, pedestrians must use it.
Walking along or upon the roadway is not permitted when a sidewalk is present.
If no sidewalk is available, pedestrians may walk on the shoulder of the roadway, staying as far from the edge of the road as possible.
If neither a sidewalk nor a shoulder exists, pedestrians may walk upon the roadway only on the left side, facing oncoming traffic.
Pedestrians walking upon the roadway must yield the right-of-way to all vehicles.
SEE the Vehicle Code section --> §3544 - Pedestrians Walking Along or on Highway
If you cannot make eye contact with an approaching driver, you are likely walking on the wrong side of the road. Always walk against traffic, whether on the shoulder or upon the roadway, to ensure you are clearly visible to drivers.
