On October 11, 2022, at 1:07 PM Matthew S. Altenau was operating a 2022 Harley Davidson Motorcycle North on S/R 32 in the Town of Saugerties. Fredrick J. Williams was operating a 1998 Honda motorcycle, following behind Altenau. As Altenau and Williams approached Old Kings Highway, a motor vehicle proceeded to enter S/R 32 from Old Kings Highway, directly into the path of both motorcycles. Altenau locked up his brakes to avoid collision with the vehicle, resulting in Williams running into the back of Altenau’s motorcycle. Both operators were knocked to the ground. The motor vehicle reportedly left the scene. Emergency personnel from the Centerville Cedar Grove Fire Department responded to the scene in addition to paramedics from DIAZ Ambulance. Altenau was treated at the scene and then transported to Kingston hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Williams was transported to Albany Medical Center, having sustained multiple injuries in the crash.
The Police investigation, which is still ongoing, has thus far resulted in Matthew S. Altenau being charged with the Misdemeanor of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the 2nd Degree, and the violation of Driving out of Class (Non-Motorcycle endorsement).
