As students head back to school, parents are encouraged to take an active role in understanding the apps and online platforms their children may be using. Technology is constantly changing, and new apps can provide opportunities to connect, communicate and have fun but they can also create safety concerns for young people.

Apps such as Roblox, TikTok, Snapchat, Discord, WhatsApp, Wizz, Kik, Telegram, Yubo, MeetMe, Zoosk, Whisper, Reddit and Parler, along with disguised or hidden apps such as Best Secret Folder and Calculator%, can present different risks depending on how they are used.

Know What Your Child Is Using

Some apps allow users to communicate with people they may not know in real life. Features such as direct messaging, livestreaming, anonymous conversations, location sharing, and disappearing messages can make it more difficult for parents to know who their child is interacting with and what they are sharing.

Gaming platforms, including Roblox and mobile gaming services, can also include chat features, friend requests, in-app purchases and interactions with other players.

Parents should also be aware that some apps are designed to look like something else. Vault or “hidden folder” apps can be used to store photos, videos or other content behind passwords or disguised icons.

Stay Involved in Their Digital Life

Online safety is an ongoing conversation. As apps change and new platforms become popular, parents should continue learning alongside their children.

Know the apps. Know who they are talking to. Know what they are sharing.

Taking a few minutes to understand your child's digital world can help parents identify potential risks, establish healthy boundaries and keep young people safer online.
