With the winter weather upon us almost daily, a reminder about driving in inclement weather seems appropriate.  Snow- and ice-covered roads can be tricky to navigate.  Speed is often a factor in crashes that occur when the roadways are snow and/or ice covered.  Remember that the posted speed limit is only when road and weather conditions are optimum.  When there is inclement weather and roads are snow and/or ice covered, SLOW DOWN!  Sometimes that may mean driving 15, 20, or 25 mph.  

Keep a following distance between you and the car in front of you of at least 3 car lengths.  Driving too close to the vehicle in front of you could spell disaster if that driver needs to take evasive action or loses control on the slippery roadway.  

Plow trucks are another issue to consider when traveling in snowy weather.  There is a "no zone" around plow trucks, as the plow truck operator cannot see you when actively plowing.  So please do not try to pass a plow truck on either side.  The passenger side of a plow truck may be equipped with a secondary plow.  There have been numerous crashes that have occurred when drivers attempted to pass a plow truck on the right and collided with the secondary plow.  

When a plow truck is spreading material such as salt, sand, or cinders you will want to stay at a minimum of 6 car lengths behind the plow truck.  If not, you risk damage to your vehicle or windshield from that material hitting your vehicle.

PennDOT has the latest information on road and weather conditions and even a plow truck tracker on the 511PA.com website or the 511PA app for your phone.  If you must travel during a storm, be sure to check 511PA first to help with your travel planning.  Always allow extra time for travel as restrictions may be in place for speed limits and/or certain vehicle types.  

Always wear a seat belt, and slow down.  With some proper planning and safe driving, you can get to your destination safely!
