With warmer weather here, more people are going outside to enjoy different modes of transportation—for fun, work, and everything in between. With that in mind, here are some important rules and guidelines for operating Electric Scooters, Motorized Pedalcycles, Motor Scooters, and E-Bikes in Pennsylvania:
🛴 Electric Scooters (E-Scooters)
• Not authorized for use on public roads or sidewalks
• Allowed for use on private property
• Under the PA Vehicle Code: They meet the definition of a motor vehicle
🛵 Motorized Pedalcycles (Mopeds)
• Minimum age: 16
• Class C driver’s license required
• Registration and insurance required
• Must have operable lights
🛵 Motor Scooters
• Minimum age: 16
• License (class M if over 50 cc, class C if under 50 cc), registration, and insurance required
• Helmet required if under 21
• Must have operable lights
🚲 E-Bikes
• Minimum age: 16
• No license, registration, or insurance required
• Must use lights between sunset and sunrise
• Generally permitted on roads and in bike lanes
