On Tuesday 21 March 2023, Stanley T Walden, 38, of Willow Street traveled with family members in their personal vehicle to MDJ William Benner’s office to be arraigned on a misdemeanor charge of terroristic threats. During the arraignment proceedings, Walden learned his probation officer issued a detainer and that, as a result of this detainer, Walden would be committed to Lancaster County Prison. Before officers could take Walden into custody for the detainer, Walden dumped the contents of a water bottle he had been holding on to himself. Walden then took a disposable lighter and ignited the liquid and himself. While on fire, Walden ran towards MDJ Benner and other officers in the courtroom. Walden’s sweatshirt was ablaze and he removed it while it was burning. A rear exit door in the courtroom was opened and Walden ran outside into the parking lot while waiving the burning sweatshirt. Once outside, most of the fire had gone out with the removal of the sweatshirt and the remaining fire was extinguished by rolling Walden on the ground. Walden was taken in to custody and EMS was dispatched to the scene. Walden was transported to Penn Medicine LGH and later transferred to Lehigh Valley Medical Center burn unit. The clear liquid in the water bottle was believed to be rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover, both clear flammable liquids. There was no damage to the property and none of the occupants of the courtroom were injured other than Walden. One count of Arson and eight counts of Recklessly Endangering Another Person were filed against Walden on Wednesday afternoon, 22 March 2023. Det Sgt Steven Heinly filed the charges. Walden is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
