Like many of our police partners, we offer an attractive benefits package, to include a defined benefit pension plan, medical, dental, vision and prescription coverages, life insurance and post- retirement health care. We also enjoy competitive salaries, education re-imbursements, longevity bonuses and generous time off/vacation. But there are so many other reasons we feel that people flock to us whenever we have an open position. This includes officers from surrounding departments, who have seen the benefits of working here. Here are some advantages of joining our team:
1. We are comprised of 18 dedicated sworn personnel and 2 amazing civilian personnel.
2. We have a modern facility, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. This includes multiple detention cells, a livescan fingerprint instrument, breath testing instruments, advanced technological reporting systems, a drone, a full gym, a separate wrestling/training room and virtual reality training devices.
3. Each officer is supplied with their own external bulletproof vest, firearm, taser, their own body worn camera, their own portable radio, flashlight and all of the equipment they need to perform their duties. All uniforms are provided and laundered by the department. Officers are permitted to carry a personally-owned rifle on duty if they choose (certain limitations apply).
4. Our vehicle fleet is practically brand new, consisting of 7 marked units and 3 unmarked units. Each patrol unit is equipped with a patrol rifle, less lethal shotgun, spike strips, breaching equipment, first aid equipment, an AED, camera systems, license plate readers, molded rear seats, window bars and so much more. We also have a marked utility/crime scene trailer.
5. We offer numerous positions and opportunities for advancement. Our rank structure includes the Chief of Police, 1 lieutenant, 2 patrol sergeants, 1 detective sergeant, 1 detective, 1 undercover narcotics detective assigned full-time to the Lancaster County Drug Task Force, 10 patrol officers and a school resource officer.
6. Opportunities to specialize abound. In addition to our Drug Task Force detective and SRO, we also have officers assigned to the Human Trafficking Task Force, County Crash Team, Auto Theft Task Force, Computer Crimes Task Force and the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT). We have immediate access to a civilian peer support specialist who assists us in providing social services and resources for individuals seeking treatment due to substance abuse.
7. We are extremely fortunate to be supported by a local community non-profit organization (the Friends of the West Lampeter Township Police) who raise money to purchase equipment for us and provide funding for training opportunities. These funds would otherwise need to come from the Township Budget. In short, the Township provides us what we need to do our job, and the Friends provide us with some extras that what we want. They have purchased everything from Less Lethal Shotguns, AEDs, Tasers, wrestling mats, a red-man suit, our drone and more equipment than most departments could ever dream.
8. Our department trains regularly. We ensure our officers can attend relevant training opportunities, whether in-house or off site.
9. We participate in numerous community related activities and events, such as National Night Out, Coffee with a Cop, Toys for Tots and community outreach presentations.
10. We look out for one another by providing confidential mental health resources to officers who may need/want them (as well as to their families and retired officers).
11. We are a department that strongly encourages self-initiated activity and proactive enforcement. Officers are also permitted to take ownership of certain investigations from beginning to end.
This list is by no means exhaustive. We encourage you to reach out with any further questions and submit your documents as soon as possible. Once all submissions have been reviewed, the selected candidates will be sent a confidential questionnaire that must be completed.
