From PennDOT:
Weekend Work Will Affect Motorists Using the Eisenhower Interchange East of Harrisburg over the Next Month
Harrisburg – Repair work will affect motorists who use the Eisenhower Interchange east of Harrisburg in Dauphin County over the next four weekends, weather permitting. The Eisenhower Interchange is formed by ramps and bridges that carry traffic on Interstate 83, Interstate 283 and Route 322 through this part of the region.
This weekend, the ramp from northbound I-283 to northbound I-83 in the Eisenhower Interchange will be closed to traffic starting at 9 PM on Friday, September 11, and continuing no later than 5 AM on Monday, September 14. Traffic will be detoured from northbound I-283 to eastbound Route 322 to the Penhar Interchange, and then directed back on westbound Route 322 through the Eisenhower Interchange to northbound I-83. Motorists are asked to be alert to this operation and to drive carefully through the detour route.
On the following weekend – Sept. 18-21 -- northbound I-83 through the interchange is scheduled to be closed. The detour will utilize eastbound Route 322, the Penhar Interchange, and westbound Route 322.
Southbound I-83 through the interchange is scheduled to be closed the weekend of September 25-28. The detour will utilize the ramp for eastbound Route 322 at Exit 47 (Derry Street) and then westbound on Paxton Street to the ramp for southbound I-83 near the Harrisburg Mall.
Southbound I-283 will be closed the weekend of October 2-5. The detour will direct motorists around the closure by way of the off-ramp at southbound I-83 Exit 47 (Derry Street) to Eisenhower Boulevard, and then briefly onto southbound Route 441 to the ramp for southbound I-283.
This construction work is part of a nearly $5.6-million repair contract with Deblin, Inc. of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, that began in late June to address 30 bridge structures on or connecting to I-83 in the Harrisburg area, including the John Harris Memorial Bridge (also known as the South Bridge), the Eisenhower Interchange (including Interstate 283 and Route 322), and bridges on the mainline between the South Bridge and Eisenhower Interchange as well as some of the ramps associated with the interchanges. The contract also includes the bridge that carries Derry Street over Route 322 and bridges that are part of the Penhar interchange with Route 322 in Swatara Township. The type of repairs are classified as “bridge preservation” and include items such as bridge joint repairs, deck repairs, and repairs to the bearings – all intended to help extend the service life of each bridge structure. When the contractor finishes repairs to bridges in the Eisenhower Interchange and its vicinity, the final work will focus on the John Harris Memorial Bridge. The overall project is scheduled to be completed by mid-April, 2016.
