Don't Become a Victim: Recognizing & Avoiding Common Scams
Scams targeting seniors are unfortunately prevalent, but with a little awareness, you can significantly reduce your risk. Here's a closer look at some common schemes and how to protect yourself:
- The "You've Won!" Scam: Imagine receiving a call or message with the exciting news that you've won a major prize!. However, if you're then asked to pay any sort of fee - be it for taxes, shipping, or processing - to claim your winnings, alarm bells should be ringing. Legitimate lotteries and sweepstakes never require winners to pay upfront costs.
- Imposter Phone Calls: Your phone rings, and the voice on the other end claims to be from a government agency like the IRS or Social Security, or perhaps a representative from your bank or a well-known company. They might demand immediate payment for a supposed debt or request personal information to verify your account. Remember, these organizations will rarely, if ever, contact you in this manner. A good rule of thumb is to hang up and call the organization directly using a number you know to be legitimate.
- The Grandparent Scam: This scam tugs at your heartstrings. You receive a call from someone claiming to be a grandchild in urgent need of money due to an emergency like an accident or legal trouble. They often pressure you to keep it a secret from other family members. Always take a moment to verify this information through another family member before sending any funds.
- Fake Tech Support: A pop-up appears on your computer screen warning of a virus, or you receive an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be tech support from a major company. They'll offer to fix the "problem" remotely, often asking for payment or access to your computer. Never give remote access to your device to someone you don't know.
- Romance and Online Friend Scams: In today's digital age, many seniors connect with others online. However, be cautious of online relationships that develop very quickly and where the other person soon begins asking for money for various reasons. Never send money to someone you've only met online.
Staying informed and cautious are your best defenses against scams. Never share personal information with unsolicited contacts, resist pressure, and be wary of gift card or wire transfer requests. If something feels suspicious, hang up. Most importantly, if you get a suspicious message about your bank, credit card, or a government agency, don't call the number given. Find their official number and call them directly.
