Position Summary

Lower Makefield Township is seeking responsible, dependable, and community-minded individuals to serve as substitute Crossing Guards. This on-call position provides coverage when full-time crossing guards re unavailable. Substitute Crossing Guards play a critical role in protecting children and ensuring safe pedestrian crossings to and from school.

This is a flexible, community-focused role ideal for individuals looking for part-time, as-needed work that truly makes a difference. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Respond to on-call assignments when coverage is needed

Assist school children and pedestrians in safely crossing roadways

Monitor traffic flow and roadway conditions at assigned posts

Identify and report hazardous or unsafe conditions to proper authorities

Maintain and properly use all safety equipment provided

Follow traffic laws and departmental procedures

Act professionally when interacting with children, parents, and the public

Work under the supervision of the Police Department

Report dangerous situations to school officials or police personnel

Working Conditions

Outdoor work in all weather conditions

Standing for extended periods of time

Working near and along active roadways

Flexible, on-call scheduling based on coverage needs

Qualifications & Requirements

Must pass a background investigation

Ability to stand and walk for long periods

Good vision and hearing

Ability to remain alert and calm in high-traffic situations

Ability to understand and follow traffic laws and instructions

Must be able to hold and use a handheld stop sign

Strong judgement and situational awareness

Ability to communicate clearly in English

Calm, professional demeanor 

Physically capable of working in outdoor conditions

Equipment & Training

All required safety equipment and uniforms provided

Training provided by the Police Department

Reflective safety gear and traffic control equipment issued
