September marks Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month, a critical reminder that mental health matters and help is always available. As your local law enforcement agency, the Cortez Police Department is committed to supporting our community's well-being and promoting resources for those in need.

In the United States, suicide is a leading cause of death, and it's essential that we work together to break the stigma surrounding mental health discussions. If you or someone you know is struggling, please know that there is hope and help available.

This month, we're proud to support two upcoming events in our community:

On Friday, September 11, join us at the ZU Gallery (48 West Main Street, Cortez, CO) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for the RISE Southwest rock painting event. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with others, express yourself creatively, and show your support for mental health awareness.

The following day, Saturday, September 12, we invite you to participate in the 5th Annual RISE Southwest Walk at Montezuma Park in Cortez. This event aims to bring together community members, resources, and messages of hope, help, and healing. 

Enjoy:

• Free breakfast and coffee
• Resource tables with mental health and wellbeing materials
• Upbeat music and speakers sharing stories focused on resilience
• A poster craft station for writing positive messages
• Sidewalk chalk messages and inspiring quotes
• Bead necklaces with colors symbolizing how suicide has affected participants' lives
• A ribbon arch with the names of people being honored and remembered
