Good Morning Cortez!
We’ve received several reports about a new scam email circulating in our community. The email includes a Google maps photo of your home or nearby homes. It threatens that Spywear has been installed on your computer or phone to expose your 'inappropriate' browsing history to your friends, family, and contacts unless you pay a ransom with Bitcoin.
Important Points to Remember
Stay Calm: These emails are designed to scare you. The scammers do not have access to your browsing history.
Do Not Pay: Paying the ransom only encourages the scammers and does not guarantee they will stop.
Report It: If you have been the victim of this scam and have lost money - please call dispatch to report the crime - 970-565-8441.
Protect Yourself
Update Your Passwords: Use strong, unique passwords or even better - phrases for your accounts! Example: Purplepicnictable911! (use upper and lower case, numbers and symbols instead of birthdates, names, or common passwords)
Enable Two-Factor Authentication: Adds an extra layer of security. Most email platforms allow for higher security levels and junk mail screening.
Be Skeptical: Always verify the source before clicking links or downloading attachments. Hover over the sender's email address!
Your safety is our priority. If you have any concerns or need assistance, please contact us. Remember, you can always provide anonymous tips through our Crimewatch website and mobile app. (CortezPD.org)
Stay safe, Cortez! 🛡️
