Congratulations Kristin!
Detective Kristin Cannon began her career with the City of Cortez in August 2018 after relocating from Durango and completing the 2018 Spring Police Academy. She currently serves as a Detective and has previously worked as a Field Training Officer and a member of the Critical Incident Debriefing Team.
Since 2022, Cannon has been an instructor at the PCC Southwest Regional Law Enforcement Academy, where she leads the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) program. She considers it a privilege to contribute to the development of many local law enforcement officers. In 2025, she received the Top Instructor Award and continues to serve on the POST (Peace Officer Standards & Training) EVOC subject‑matter expert committee, helping advance high‑quality training opportunities for officers across Colorado.
Cannon is deeply committed to supporting crime victims in their pursuit of justice. She was awarded both the Life Saver Award and the Meritorious Service Award for her life‑saving actions during a shooting in September 2023. She notes that the most meaningful part of the job is serving others, especially when community members share how her work has positively impacted their lives.
She remains grateful to the Cortez community for the support shown following the loss of her sergeant and friend, Mike Moran. Particularly meaningful demonstrations of support were the candlelight vigil, the moment of silence observed during the 2023 Christmas Parade, just weeks after Mike was killed, and the Blue Light Honor Walk in 2024.
Outside of work, Cannon enjoys practicing welding and exploring the desert in search of rare cacti. She’s cherished Cortez for its incredible views, public lands and the warmth of its community, and she’s excited to carry that same appreciation into her new chapter in Telluride.
"Choose character over conformity, integrity over comfort, and hold unshakeable values." - Det. Kristin Cannon
