Kaylee Sanders, suspect in two homicide cases that took place in July 2023 is set for sentencing on Friday, September 20 at 9 am in the Montezuma Combined Courts.
The Cortez Police Department responded to a call at 1:26 am on July 28, 2023 in the area of South Madison Street for a call of shots fired. Officers discovered a male homicide victim, Morgan Salgado, the suspect's brother. Sanders drew a weapon and fled. The emergency alert system was activated for the community to shelter in place due to the armed suspect at large. The suspect was discovered in the South Broadway area waving a loaded gun. Officers subdued the woman using less-lethal weapons and she was taken into custody at 3:17 am and was transported to the Montezuma County Jail where she has remained since July 28, 2023.
On that same day at 11:30 am, Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office was called to a residence located on Highway 145, north of Dolores, for a welfare check on the person renting the property. An adult male, later identified as Lewis Wall, was found deceased inside the residence. Initial investigation determined that the death was a homicide that had occurred sometime on July 27.
Kaylee O. Sanders, age 21 at the time of her arrest, was charged with Murder in the Second Degree in both cases. Bond was set in the amount of one million dollars.
