On February 12 at around 8 pm, a caller reported seeing two teens walking around 4th and Maple Streets, one holding a gun. Officers responded and contacted the teens at the 7th Street Lot (the old high school) where they were found to be in possession of a 9mm gun. The teens were transported to the Cortez Police Department and their parents were contacted. The gun is suspected to have been used in the shooting that occurred on February 7 in Cortez on East 4th Street. Two other young men, a 16-year-old and an 18-year-old, Israel Santiesteban have been arrested in connection with this incident.
The teens and their parents each signed a promise to appear for charges of possession of a firearm by a juvenile and possession of a defaced firearm. They are both set to appear in juvenile court on February 26 at 9am in the Montezuma County Combined Courts.
