10/2/24 Sentencing - The 17-year-old appeared via Webex this morning from Grand Mesa Youth Services in Grand Junction where he has been held since July 5th. He was sentenced to twenty-four months' probation (lack of prior criminal history) and will be released today to live in Grand Junction with his family. He was sentenced to five days of detention and will receive credit for time served. He was apologetic to the Cortez community and admitted that he had made a poor decision to fire a gun into the air when faced with the threats and the physical fighting that occurred that night.
Update 7/8/24 2:26pm - The suspect will remain in custody without bond until the next juvenile court docket date set for 7/24/24.
7/5/24 3:25pm - A 17 year-old has been arrested for the incident in Parque De Vida last evening and is being transported to the Grand Mesa Youth Services Center. A handgun has been recovered. The investigation is ongoing.
At about 9:35pm a fight broke out at the skatepark on Montezuma Avenue in Cortez.
Multiple shots were fired into the air.
No injuries were reported because of the shots.
The suspect fled on foot - believed to be a juvenile.
Officers are investigating.
We do not believe that there is an active threat to the public.
Information will be released as it becomes available.
