As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day, the Dallas Township Police Department would like to remind residents that while consumer fireworks are legal in Pennsylvania, their use is governed by state law. Understanding these requirements can help ensure everyone enjoys a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Consumer Fireworks

Pennsylvania law permits individuals 18 years of age or older to purchase and use consumer fireworks. However, there are several important restrictions.

Consumer fireworks may not be:

• Ignited or discharged within 150 feet of an occupied structure
• Used on public or private property without the property owner's express permission
• Discharged from or directed at a vehicle or building
• Used while a person is under the influence of alcohol, a controlled substance, or another drug
• Intentionally directed toward another person

Professional Display Fireworks

Professional display fireworks may only be used by licensed professionals who have obtained the required municipal permit. These are the large aerial shells and display fireworks you typically see at organized public fireworks shows.

Permitted Hours

Under Pennsylvania law, consumer fireworks may be used until 1:00 a.m. on July 2, July 3, and July 4 in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

While fireworks may be legally be permitted during these hours, we encourage everyone to be considerate of their neighbors. Many residents have young children, pets, veterans, and others who may be sensitive to loud noises.

Fireworks Safety Tips

Before using consumer fireworks:

• Read and follow all manufacturer instructions.
• Keep a bucket of water or garden hose readily available.
• Keep children and spectators at a safe distance.
• Never attempt to relight a malfunctioning firework.
• Never hold fireworks in your hand while lighting them.
• Dispose of used fireworks only after they have been thoroughly soaked with water.

Every year, fireworks cause serious burns and traumatic injuries. Taking a few extra precautions can help prevent a trip to the emergency room and keep the holiday focused on making memories with family and friends.
