After more than 30 years of dedicated service, Assistant Chief of Police S. Andrew Brock will officially retire from the Cortez Police Department today, January 2, 2026.
Assistant Chief Brock began his journey in law enforcement in 1995 at the Delta Montrose Technical College Law Enforcement Academy. He graduated and joined the Cortez Police Department on August 21, 1995.
Throughout his career, Assistant Chief Brock served in many important roles that shaped both the department and the community. In 2000, he became the School Resource Officer at the middle school, where he developed the GREAT program (Gang Resistance Education and Training) to guide and protect students.
He was promoted to Patrol Sergeant in 2002 and later to Patrol Lieutenant in 2008, continuing to demonstrate leadership and dedication. Following the passing of Chief Roy Lane in 2019, Brock served as Interim Chief of Police until 2020, after which the assistant chief position was created in early 2021 and Andy was promoted to the role on March 22, 2021. He once again stepped into the Interim Chief role in October 2024 when Chief Vernon Knuckles was deployed for fourteen months with the National Guard. In addition to these leadership roles, Brock also served as a K9 handler in the early 2000s, working alongside his trusted partner, Vok.
His leadership and commitment to Cortez have left a lasting mark on the community he has served for more than three decades.
As he transitions into retirement, Assistant Chief Brock looks forward to spending more time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, a well‑deserved chapter after decades of service.
Please join us in thanking Assistant Chief Brock for his dedication and congratulating him on his many years of service!
