LANSDALE BOROUGH- We are seeing an increasing number of young riders operating electric motorcycles and high-powered electric dirt bikes on local roads, sidewalks, and trails—vehicles that are often being marketed online and in stores as “e-bikes.”
Many of these do not meet Pennsylvania’s legal definition of a Pedalcycle with Electric Assist.
In Pennsylvania, a legal e-bike must:
• Have fully operable pedals
• Have a motor of 750 watts or less
• Weigh under 100 pounds
• Provide motor assistance only up to 20 mph
• Be designed for operation by riders 16 years of age or older
If a vehicle exceeds these limits, or cannot be pedaled like a traditional bicycle, it may be classified as a motor-driven cycle or motorcycle, which requires registration, insurance, and a properly licensed operator. Many of the electric bikes being purchased online do not meet these requirements and cannot be legally operated on public roadways or bike paths.
A few important reminders for all riders:
• Follow all traffic laws, signals, and signage
• Under Pennsylvania’s “Paul Miller’s Law,” handheld device use while operating is prohibited
• Helmets are strongly recommended for all riders
Parents: Before purchasing an electric bike, please take time to review the specifications. If it looks like a motorcycle, rides like a motorcycle, or exceeds these limits, it may not be legal for street or trail use in Pennsylvania.
If you are unsure about a specific model, contact the Lansdale Borough Police Department before purchasing. We are happy to help clarify what is legal and what is not.
Ride responsibly. Know the law.
