Just a reminder that this is the time to make sure that you and your vehicle are winter ready. If you are not mechanically inclined or don't like vehicle maintenance, take your vehicle to your mechanic for a quick check to make sure it is ready for the changing weather conditions coming.
Here are some things that should be checked now:
Tires- make sure that the tread depth is correct and that tire pressure is correct. The tire pressure is on the side wall of the tire and in your vehicle owner's manual. Tread depth should not go below 2/32". Proper tread depth helps with traction in the snow and on the road.
Windshield wipers- do a smear and clear check with some soapy water. If your wipers are streaking on the windshield then it is time to have them replaced. Also make sure that your windshield wiper fluid is full. With slushy, wet roadways, dirty spray can make vision difficult. Remember it is state law that if your wipers are on, your headlights are on.
Lighting- check that headlights, taillights, turn signals, hazard lights, and parking lights are all functioning properly.
Emergency preparedness kit- this should include gloves, hat, blanket, flashlight, batteries, small shovel, ice scraper, jumper cables, first aid kit, windshield wiper fluid, non-perishable foods, water, medications, items for the kids, items for your pets and anything else you feel would be beneficial should you break down or get stranded during a storm. You can check www.511PA.com for all road and weather conditions before you travel. If you must travel during an inclement weather event, allow extra time and slow down. Remember that state law requires that you remove all ice and snow from your vehicle windows, hood, trunk, and roof.
Whenever travelling, always buckle up!
