Real Scam Call Audio Shared to Help Region's Residents Stay Alert

wWh2QaI9p_8.jpg

Earlier this morning on August 25, 2026, an Old Lycoming resident reported receiving multiple phone calls from a male claiming to be an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The caller alleged that the victim’s bank account was being used to purchase bomb‑making materials and instructed her to withdraw money to “protect” her funds.

The caller sent the victim a fraudulent photograph of supposed federal credentials and demanded she keep her phone line open while preparing to go to the bank. The victim instead traveled to the police department to report the incident.

Lycoming Regional Police accompanied the victim back to her residence, where the fraudulent caller remained on an open phone line. The call was audio recorded with the victim's permission.  When officers identified themselves, the caller immediately disconnected.

What the Fraudster Said

For public awareness, the following brief excerpt reflects the tone and tactics used by the scammer and is designed to create fear, urgency, and compliance.

Important Safety Reminders

  • Federal agencies will NEVER instruct you to withdraw money from your bank account.
  • They will NEVER demand you keep a phone line open or stay on the phone.
  • They will NEVER send credentials via text message or ask you to delete evidence.
  • If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately.
  • Do not provide personal information, banking details, or photographs.

What To Do If You Receive a Similar Call

  • Hang up and contact your local police department.
  • Report impersonation scams to the FBI at ic3.gov.
  • Notify your bank if you believe your financial information may have been compromised.
  • Share this message with family members—especially seniors—who are frequently targeted.

Our Commitment

The Lycoming Regional Police Department remains committed to protecting residents from fraud, scams, and impersonation attempts. Public awareness is one of the most effective tools in preventing victimization.

If you have questions or believe you may have been targeted, please contact the Lycoming Regional Police Department's non‑emergency line.
