The Manheim Township Police Department maintains two American Flag retirement collection boxes for members of our community wishing to properly retire worn or tattered American Flags. One box is located at the Manheim Township Municipal Office, 1840 Municipal Drive, and the other at Oregon Dairy, 2900 Oregon Pike.
Occasionally, interment flags are placed in these boxes. These are the American Flags that once draped the caskets of United States veterans. Rather than being retired in the traditional manner, these flags are respectfully set aside and transported to Indiantown Gap National Cemetery to be displayed in the Avenue of Flags.
On Thursday, May 21, two Manheim Township Police officers transported 19 interment flags to Indiantown Gap National Cemetery for this purpose.
Each flag represents a veteran who served our nation with honor. Seeing them displayed once more at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery is a fitting final tribute to the men and women who defended our country, our freedoms, and the flag itself.
Community members who have an interment flag belonging to a loved one may place those flags in one of our collection boxes or drop them off directly at the Manheim Township Police Department. We will ensure they are handled with the dignity and respect they deserve and transported to Indiantown Gap National Cemetery to be donated to the Avenue of Flags.
Bless our troops, our veterans, and the United States of America.
