Manheim Township Police announce the passing of Retired Chief Thomas Rudzinski

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of recently retired Manheim Township Police Chief Thomas Rudzinski. After a tough fight against cancer, Chief Rudzinski peacefully passed away this morning at his home with his family at his side.

Prior to beginning his career with the Manheim Township Police in May 1987, Tom graduated from Franklin and Marshal with a degree in government.   While employed by the Township, "Rudz" obtained a master's degree in criminal justice from Boston University and completed Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command. He was highly decorated, receiving numerous awards for proficiencies, lifesaving, and distinguished service. He served the municipality in various assignments & capacities during his tenure and was promoted through the ranks - Sergeant, Lieutenant, and ultimately rose to Chief of Police in 2017.   Tom helped further the field of law enforcement by serving on numerous committees and in various organizations, notably as the President of the Central Pennsylvania Chiefs, the Third Vice-President of the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Associations, and the Chairman of the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission.

Residing in Manheim Township for over thirty-six years, Tom deeply cared about the community. He took the stake he shared with all the residents and businesses seriously. He volunteered in countless capacities, youth baseball, and scouting, to name a few. He lived by the adage in his Chief's message, "I ask my officers to treat people they encounter as if they were their own family."

It is no surprise that Chief Rudzinski was well-known and loved throughout the Township, across the Commonwealth, and widespread within the police profession. In an interview on Townlively.com earlier this year, Rudzinski said, "My goal was to make a difference for as long as possible. I hope I've been able to improve the quality of life in Manheim Township. I hope that I did a good job of making the community a safe place to live."

Details regarding funeral arrangements are still developing. We ask you to keep Tom's family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
