These scams keep hitting our residents, and we’re tired of watching good people lose their money to these immoral, soulless predators.
Just this week, on October 22, one of our neighbors lost $5,720 to one of these impersonation scams.
Here’s how it usually goes:
Someone calls claiming to be from the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office (or some other government agency). They tell you that you missed jury duty, that there’s a warrant for your arrest, and that you can “take care of it” right now by sending money through a Bitcoin ATM, a gift card, or a wire transfer.
They’ll even make it look like the call is coming from the Sheriff’s Office by spoofing their phone number. (In other words, don’t trust caller ID)
Then they keep you on the phone the whole time, telling you not to hang up, not to tell anyone, and to “get it done fast.”
It’s all fake. Every last bit of it.
We get it, hearing that you have a warrant is scary. But if you’re not standing in front of a judge in a courtroom, don't pay anything.
Real law enforcement will never call you and demand payment. You cannot pay a warrant with Bitcoin, gift cards, Venmo, or whatever crypto circus act these crooks invent next.
If someone calls claiming to be law enforcement and starts talking about payment, HANG UP!
If you’re unsure, for the love of all that is holy, we beg you, call us directly or come see us in person at 1825 Municipal Drive, Lancaster, PA 17601 (it’s the brick building with the police cars). You aren't bothering us or wasting our time; we are here for you. Be comforted by a real-life cop confirming you don't have a warrant.
We genuinely care about our residents and will do everything we can to track these predators and protect our community. But the best defense is awareness, so help us out:
