Here are some helpful tips to reduce the opportunities for would-be thiefs to steal your bicycle:
1. Double-up security by using at least two high-quality locks when securing your bicycle outdoors. Consider using a "U-lock" instead of a cable lock, which can be cut.
2. Use locks to secure not only the frame, but the tires/wheels as well. Be sure to secure all components of your bicycle. If your bicycle has quick-release seats, wheels and other components, consider switching them out with a release mechanism that requires a key.
3. Lock your bicycle to an immoveable object. Chose a location which offers both visibility and security.
4. Always bring your bicycle inside when you are not using it, and secure your property too. If you do not have an inside space to secure it, then secure it in a well-lit area.
5. If you return to your bicycle and find a tire(s) punctured, do not leave it unattended. Unlock your bicycle and take it with you. Sometimes thiefs will use flattening tires to disable the bicycle in hopes of coming back later to take it.
6. If you park your bicycle in a public place frequently, try rotating the space you park it so your location does not become an easily-observed routine.
Here are some helpful tips which could help if you do find yourself the victim of a bicycle thief:
1. Make your bike unique. Bicycles with personalized elements make them more recognizable and more difficult for a thief to later sell.
2. Take note of your bicycle's serial number ahead of time. This will help ID your bicycle if it is found, and may also be of assistance if the bicycle is sold by the thief.
