For those of you that knew Haywood Walker, most of what we’re about to say will make perfect sense, for those of you who never had the opportunity to meet Haywood, much of what we’re about to say probably will not make much sense. Haywood was the #1 fan of the local emergency services, EMS, Fire, and Police around here. With him being laid to rest today we thought we’d share a list of things that we’ll miss about Haywood, with a typical LBPD spin on it…………..
Dear Brotha Walka,
We will greatly miss the 37-82 phone calls a day to our station landline just to say hi! As “annoying” as it sometimes was to constantly see your phone number pop up on the caller ID, the silence is now deafening.
We will miss you telling us “There won’t ever be another one like me” and your belly laugh when we would reply with “Lets hope there’s never another one like you!”
We will miss asking you when your baby is due and you patting your big belly in response while saying “any day now!”
We will miss asking you what name you were going to give your baby and you’d say “Kenny Wolfe” followed by your belly laugh.
We will miss giving you a hard time about how much money you were wasting smoking cigarettes.
We will miss Saturday and Sunday mornings on the front bench of our station sharing a donut and coffee while facetiming random off-duty officers just to say hi.
We will miss sharing our meals that we brought from home with you when you told us you were low on food, even though we knew you had plenty and just wanted to chat.
We will miss you showing up to our shift changes at our former parking garage and giving us the latest low down on the town happenings, with a Haywood spin on it.
We will miss not seeing you wave to us and yell “Hi Friend” as we would pass by your house.
We will miss you joking with some of us about how you were going to steal our wives/girlfriends from us, followed by your belly laugh.
We will miss you joking with us when we would tell you that our significant other was pregnant that you were the father, followed by your belly laugh.
We will miss seeing you pushing your lawnmower all over town(sometimes while running) to all the yards you mowed for people.
We will miss not seeing you at all of the Lititz events throughout the year.
We will miss asking you “Have you been working out?” followed by you flexing your non-existent biceps while saying "Yeah, cant you tell" and then a belly laugh.
We will miss not seeing you walking down Main Street with your carryout order of the Roma lunch special.
We will miss you proudly giving the right of passage and sometimes permanent nicknames to some of our Officers;
Sgt. Jared Hahn – Hahnzzz
Sgt. Steve Detz – Stevie Dett
Ofcr. Chris Armato - Armada
Ofcr. Jevon Miller – Devin Millah
Ofcr. Justin Miller – Jutin
Ofcr. Cameron Burke – Camera
Ofcr. Tyler Weinoldt – Teller Ronald
Ofcr. Megan Davis - Maggan
Chief Bill Seace(retired) – Cheap seats
Det. Sgt. John Schofield(retired) – John Gofield
Haywood had a kind and caring soul, but like most of us, he also had his faults too. We often times would do our best to help him get through whatever was affecting him. He had really struggled here as of late with the passing of his mother and other family members and we knew he was hurting. Hopefully he is reunited with them!
Special Thanks to Haywoods buddy George who would often bring Haywood back to Lititz for visits the past several months while Haywood was staying at a long term nursing care center in Lancaster. Several of us were fortunate to spend some time with Haywood a few weeks ago during his last visit to us before his passing.
Lastly…….Haywood would often end a conversation or phone call with “You’re not my friend, you’re my family.” We’ll miss never hearing those words from you again, and even though you’re gone, you’ll always be family!
Rest in Peace Brotha Walka!
