Joint Safety Message for 4th of July Activities in Lititz Borough

GOING OUTSIDE? – FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES TO STAY SAFE:

Joint message from the Warwick Emergency Services Commission (WESC), Lititz Borough Emergency Management, Lititz Borough Police Department, Lititz Fire Company, Warwick EMS, Lititz Lions Club, Lititz 4th of July Committee, and Mayor John George:

The weather forecast for Saturday, July 4th, calls for temperatures in the upper 90s, with a significantly higher heat index (what the temperature actually feels like).
The 4th of July activities in Lititz Borough—especially during this historic 250th Semiquincentennial anniversary—are beloved community traditions highly anticipated by our residents and visitors alike. If you plan to attend the annual Independence Day Parade, the day-long events in Lititz Springs Park, or the fireworks display that night, your safety is our top priority.
We strongly urge everyone to take proper precautions and follow these heat-safety guidelines:

  • Hydrate Early: Do not wait until you feel thirsty to start drinking water. Begin hydrating before you head outdoors, carry refillable water bottles, and limit your intake of excessive caffeine and alcohol.
  • Dress for the Heat: Choose loose-fitting, breathable, and light-colored clothing. A wide-brimmed hat is highly recommended to shield yourself from direct sunlight.
  • Protect Your Skin: Apply and regularly reapply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Seek Shade & Cool Spaces: Claim shaded spots along event routes, take regular breaks out of the sun, and utilize air-conditioned spaces or vehicles when possible.
  • Utilize Cooling Gear: Use wet towels, misting fans, or splash water on your face and arms to lower your body temperature. Consider bringing battery-operated fans and cooling towels.
  • Know the Signs of Heat Illness: Watch yourself and others for symptoms like dizziness, nausea, headache, or confusion. If you notice these signs, immediately move to an air-conditioned building or vehicle and seek medical help if needed.
  • Protect the Vulnerable: Please monitor weather updates closely and assess whether you or those in your care can safely tolerate extreme temperatures. Pay extra attention to the elderly, infants and young children, pets, and individuals with underlying medical conditions. If you have any concerns, you are encouraged to stay home.
  • Asphalt and Concrete – These surfaces can be hotter than the surrounding air. Prior to sitting on them, recognize they may be hotter, and use barrier layers or a chair. Avoid sitting directly on them.
  • Consult Your Doctor: If you have chronic medical conditions or take regular medications, check with your physician regarding your personal heat tolerance.

Please stay safe, look out for one another, and let's ensure our community's Semiquincentennial celebration is both memorable and safe for everyone.
