Communities across Pennsylvania, including Lancaster County, have experienced a rise in thefts involving certain Kia and Hyundai vehicles. These vehicles may be more susceptible to theft, even when locked, if they have not received the latest manufacturer‑issued anti-theft updates.
The Lancaster Township Police Department is urging all Kia and Hyundai owners to review their vehicle’s recall status and ensure that all available free anti‑theft software upgrades have been installed. Both manufacturers have implemented programs to assist owners and reduce the risk of theft.
Kia Statement:
“We are providing assistance to Kia owners and lessees whose vehicles may be targeted by methods of theft that have been popularized on social media. We continue to offer a free, enhanced security software upgrade to restrict the unauthorized operation of vehicle ignition systems on locked vehicles to owners nationally, and we strongly encourage all eligible vehicle owners to have this upgrade installed.”

Hyundai Statement:
“In response to increasing and persistent thefts targeting certain Hyundai vehicles without push‑button ignitions and immobilizing anti‑theft devices, Hyundai has introduced a free anti‑theft software upgrade for affected customers. All of the nearly 4 million vehicles involved are now eligible to receive the software upgrade.”
