On October 18, 2024, James Tyler Magaha, 34, of Granville, Tennessee, turned himself in on charges filed against him by the Derry Township Police Department. Magaha is accused of operating a Toyota Sequoia on October 6, 2024, at about 9:40pm on Park Avenue in Derry Township and running into and over off-duty Lieutenant Juan Castro, Jr., who is a University Police Officer for Penn State University's Harrisburg Campus. Magaha then fled the scene in the Toyota Sequoia. With the use of multiple sources of video surveillance and other advanced investigative techniques, Magaha was identified and charged on October 11, 2024, by Derry Township Police with Attempted Murder and Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Serious Bodily Injury. On October 15, 2024, Derry Township Police were notified that Magaha had contacted counsel in the Harrisburg area and wished to turn himself in to authorities. Magaha was arraigned and released after he posted $100,000 bail. He is awaiting preliminary hearing of the case. Lt. Castro is still hospitalized in stable condition as a result of injuries sustained in the incident.
