E-Bikes in Pennsylvania: Safety Reminders and Regulations

As the popularity of e-bikes continues to grow in Pennsylvania, the Shippensburg Police Department would like to remind residents and visitors of the importance of safe riding practices and adherence to state regulations.

In Pennsylvania, e-bikes are considered vehicles and are subject to the same rules of the road as traditional bicycles. Riders must:

• Follow all traffic laws and signs
• Yield to pedestrians and other vehicles
• Ride in the same direction as traffic
• Use designated bike lanes when available

Additionally, Pennsylvania law requires e-bike riders to:

• Be at least 16 years old to operate a Class 1 or Class 2 e-bike
• Wear a properly fitted helmet
• Not ride on sidewalks, except where permitted by local ordinance

The Shippensburg Police Department encourages all e-bike riders to take necessary safety precautions, including:

• Wearing bright and reflective clothing
• Using front and rear lights at night
• Keeping both hands on the handlebars, except when signaling
• Avoiding distractions, such as using a phone while riding

By following these guidelines and regulations, e-bike riders can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for themselves and others on Pennsylvania's roads.
