Senior Citizens

Senior Citizens may be more vulnerable to certain crimes, such as purse snatching, mugging, and fraud.  Being careful, alert, and a good neighbor may reduce the opportunities criminals have to take advantage of all people.

When You Are Out in Public:

  • Make sure someone knows where you’re going and when you expect to return.
  • If you carry a purse, hold it close to your body.
  • Avoid carrying large sums of money. If you do have a large amount of cash, have a friend accompany you.
  • Don’t display large amounts of cash in stores or other public places.
  • Observe your surroundings.  Be cautious of any activity near your car.
  • Have your car or house key in hand as you approach your vehicle or home.
  • While driving, keep doors locked and windows up.
  • Park your vehicle in well-lit, busy areas.
  • If you have car trouble, be cautious of strangers who offer help.
  • If a friend or a taxi takes you home, ask the driver to wait until you are safely inside.

While You Are At Home:

  • Keep your doors locked at all times, even when you’re inside.
  • Protect windows and sliding glass doors with good locks or other security devices.
  • Get to know your neighbors and keep their phone numbers handy for emergencies.
  • Keep all valubles locked in a safe or other secure area.
  • Do not keep large sums of cash at home.
  • Do not allow any strangers in your home to use the phone or bathroom.
  • Do not leave your house unlocked and unoccupied to talk to a unsolicited contractor.
  • Do not allow any contractors whom you didn’t originally call to perform work on your house or property.
  • Always get a written estimate for any repair work and a receipt for any payments you make to them.
  • Do not give cash to any contractors.

If you are a victim of a crime, don’t hesitate – contact your local police.  Newville police officers work round the clock to protect and serve all members of our community.  You can reach us by dialing 717-776-5513 or “911″.
