The 2026–2027 school year begins in one week, and we’d like to remind motorists to pay attention and keep an eye out for stopped school buses. With school buses returning to regular routes, it's essential to prioritize the safety of children. When you notice a school bus slowing down or coming to a halt, be aware that children may be boarding or exiting the vehicle, or present in the surrounding areas. Remember, it's both hazardous and illegal to pass a stopped school bus.
To ensure the safety of our children, follow these straightforward rules:
- Yellow Flashing Lights: When you see yellow flashing lights on a school bus, it's a signal that the vehicle is preparing to stop to pick up or drop off children. Reduce your speed and prepare to bring your vehicle to a complete stop.
- Red Flashing Lights: Red flashing lights and an extended stop arm indicate that the bus has stopped and children are boarding or exiting. You MUST bring your vehicle to a complete stop. Wait until the red lights cease flashing, the stop arm is retracted, and the bus begins moving before you proceed.
- Stay Vigilant: Even when lights are not flashing, remain alert—especially during morning and mid-afternoon hours when children are traveling to or from school. Use extra caution when reversing out of driveways and when driving through neighborhoods, school zones, or near bus stops.
Let's work together to ensure a safe and successful school year by keeping a watchful eye out for our children and school buses.
