In 1997, the Saugerties Police Department began its K-9 Program with a single handler and canine. Over the last 26 years, the department has had 6 canine partners supporting its members.
Several weeks ago, Saugerties Police K-9, Max, was diagnosed with Histiocytic Sarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer. On April 6th, Max was started on comfort care and given from 2 - 8 weeks to live. Sadly, we are not fortunate enough for the latter, and Max is suffering too much.
Max, has had a successful career, one that has earned him many accolades and distinguished canine awards. One of K-9 Max's most commendable achievements involved the detection and discover of a cache of hidden firearms in the Town of Saugerties. K-9 Max's performance has been exemplary, bringing credit to his handler, Jeremy Rushkoski, and the Saugerties Police.
It is with great sadness that we are announcing that on Friday, April 28th, 2023, at 5pm, Sgt. Rushkoski and K-9 Max will be ending their last shift together. For those who wish to celebrate Max’s life and achievements and wishing to extend thanks to K-9 Max, for his years of dedicated service, we are inviting you to attend Max’s final walkout from police headquarters. If you plan to attend, we ask that you be at police headquarters by 4:45pm.
