How to Prevent Vehicle Thefts and Break-Ins

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a motor vehicle is stolen every 37 seconds in the United States. To combat this trend, the Brighton Police Department is offering essential tips to safeguard your vehicle and prevent theft or break-ins.

Prevention is Key:

  • Never leave your keys in the vehicle.
  • Close and lock all windows and doors when parking.
  • Park in well-lit areas and near building surveillance cameras whenever possible.
  • Never leave valuables in your vehicle.
  • If you must leave something valuable in your vehicle, keep it out of plain view to avoid attracting potential thieves.
  • Never leave a firearm unattended in your vehicle unless it is stored in a safe or lockbox out of view.

Take Advantage of Modern Technology:

Many newer model vehicles come equipped with tracking devices that can be activated through an app on your smartphone. Ensure this software is up to date to maximize its effectiveness.

What to Do in Case of Theft or Break-In:

If your vehicle is stolen or broken into, please call 911 immediately. The sooner you report the incident, the better chance we have of recovering your stolen items.

Increased Patrols and Community Support:

The Brighton Police Department has increased patrols around medical buildings, where we have seen an uptick in vehicle break-ins. Our night shift will be present in your neighborhoods as a deterrent to car thieves. If you require a steering wheel lock for your vehicle, please visit the Brighton Police Department during regular business hours, and one of our officers will be happy to assist you.

By following these simple yet effective tips and staying vigilant, we can work together to prevent vehicle theft and break-ins in our community.
