Citizen's Police Academy

To acquaint Brighton residents and merchants with the Brighton Police Department's responsibilities and legal issues as the agency enforces laws within the criminal justice system, the Department designed the Brighton Citizens' Police Academy. Participation in the Academy reinforces the importance of a strong community police partnership.

In addition to Brighton Police Department presenters, previous guest presenters have included Brighton Town Judges, the Monroe County District Attorney, the Monroe County Public Defender, and police K-9 units. There have been field trips to the 911 Center, the Monroe County Jail, and the Public Safety Training Facility. Examples of topics that have been presented include:

  • Crime scene investigations
  • Theories of prosecution and defense
  • Vehicle, traffic, drug and DWI law enforcement
  • Domestic violence
  • Legal issues, the judicial system, and rights of the accused
  • Police training

The Brighton Police Department is offering an eight-week Citizens’ Police Academy starting in the Fall of 2023. The classes will be on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Brighton Police Department, and may include some off-site tours.  Because each class creates a basis for the following presentations, we ask that applicants plan to attend all of the classes.

This session is limited to 20 students, with preference given to Brighton residents. To register for this free Citizens' Police Academy, fill out the application and return it to Lt. Allison Laubacher, Brighton Police Department, 2300 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, NY, 14618. For more information, please contact Lt. Allison Laubacher at (585) 784-5131 or via email.
