The Merrimack County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) has been made aware that our personnel’s names are being utilized in a financial scam. The scam involves phone calls from subjects posing as deputies who threaten arrest due to an outstanding cash warrant. The subjects then attempt to extort money in the form of a payment to “satisfy the warrant.”
We have also been advised that the calls themselves can appear to be coming from the Merrimack County Sheriff's Office on caller IDs. This is another technique commonly utilized by scammers called “spoofing.” The Merrimack County Sheriff's Office will never use one of our numbers or employees to solicit money or make demands. If you receive one of these calls please hang up and call our office at (603) 796-6600. We will have one of our deputies assist you.
As always, be cautious of releasing personal information like your social security number or banking information. Another scam to be aware of is anyone who calls asking for payment in the form of gift cards or crypto-currency. These form of payments typically indicate a scam and would never be asked by a legitimate law enforcement agency.
Thank you and please feel free to contact our agency with any questions or concerns.
