The Summit Police Department is welcoming our newest addition to our patrol unit. Through the generous donations made from local businesses in the past to the department, specifically for K9 operations, the summit police are able to add a police dog to our patrol assets. The selected K9 handler, Officer Correa, along with Sgt. Mase (Handler of K9 Harley our narcotics dog) and Interim Chief Ortiz attended Shallow Creek Kennels in Pennsylvania to select our newest member. Shallow Creek Kennels, a nationally recognized trainer of police and military dogs provided a display of several impressive choices. With their guidance, expertise and Sgt. Mase's experience the pictured dog was selected to be Officer Correa's new partner.
This new addition will be specifically tasked to provide patrol functions to the village of summit and is trained in tracking, article searches, narcotics detection, and suspect apprehension. Officer Correa will return to Shallow Creek in March to rejoin his new partner and both will go through an intensive training course to be certified as a K9 handler. Upon graduation, both will return to be certified in Illinois and begin patrol duties in our community.
This is another example of our community stake holders investing in the safety of the village and we are very appreciative of their generosity and partnership.
