The Cortez Police Department is excited to announce that enrollment is now open for the 2025 Fall Citizens Academy. This hands-on, six-week experience kicks off Wednesday, October 15, 2025, and runs every Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. through November 19th. Classes will be held at the Cortez Police Department, located at 608 North Park Street, Cortez, CO.
This is your chance to step into the shoes of a Cortez police officer and experience the realities of law enforcement from the inside. You’ll get to participate in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, learn how our drone and bike patrol programs operate, and even have the opportunity to shoot less-lethal weapons like tasers in a safe, supervised setting.
Explore the world of arrest control tactics and dive into the investigative side of policing with our detectives. You’ll also get an exclusive look at body-worn camera footage, try actual FBI-approved arrest control tactics, and tour the Montezuma-Cortez 911 Dispatch Center to see how emergency calls are managed in real time. Throughout the academy, you’ll meet members of our department, hear their stories, and build lasting connections with the officers who serve your community.
Enrollment is free and open to all Montezuma County residents aged 18 and older. Physical participation is optional, whether you want to jump in or simply observe, we welcome you at your comfort level. Seats are limited, so early registration is encouraged.
Make it a girls’ night, bring a friend, your spouse, or a family member and join us for an unforgettable experience that brings our community and department closer together. We can’t wait to meet you!
Applicants will receive an email from the Cortez Police Department asking for their birthdate to allow for a quick background check. It’s part of making sure everyone has a safe and fun experience.
