On Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at approximately 11 pm, officers were advised of a Safe2Tell report that stated an incident took place at Trinidad High School involving a student bringing a firearm to school since Monday.
Officers contacted the juvenile and his mother. During the first interview, the juvenile denied any knowledge of a firearm. At this point, Officers left the residence and noticed a vehicle that had previously been driven by the juvenile. Officers looked in the window of the vehicle and saw a box of ammunition. They then returned to the residence and spoke with the juvenile again.
During the second interview, the juvenile admitted to taking the firearm to school and told Officers he had purchased the firearm from a fellow student. The firearm was then surrendered to Officers. The juvenile’s mother gave Officers permission to search the vehicle and Officers recovered ammunition from the vehicle.
There is no threat to the public. This case is still under investigation and no other information will be released at this time.
According to Chief Charles Glorioso this incident is a great example of the Safe2Tell system. Trinidad Police Department gets tips from Safe2Tell throughout the school year and each tip is investigated. “Thanks to the person who sent an anonymous tip to Safe2Tell, this situation was resolved quickly and safely,” said Glorioso.
