The warning period for Paul Miller's Law has ended. Effective on 06/05/2026, the law is fully enforceable.
Under this law, drivers may not hold or use a handheld mobile device while operating a motor vehicle. This include texting, scrolling, social media, emailing, dialing phone numbers, or other interactive use of a mobile device. The law also applies when stopped at a traffic light, stopped in traffic, or during any temporary roadway delay. Violations carry a $50 fine plus court costs. This is a primary offense, meaning officers can stop a driver solely for this violation.
Paul Miller's Law was named in memory of Paul Miller Jr., who was killed by a distracted driver in 2010.
Before you drive:
- Put your phone away.
- Set your GPS before leaving.
- Use hands-free technology when needed.
