As warmer weather arrives, the East Lansdowne Police Department would like to remind residents about Pennsylvania laws regarding E-Bikes and Electric Scooters.
Pennsylvania law allows certain E-Bikes, officially called “Pedalcycles with Electric Assist,” when they meet specific requirements:
• Must have operable pedals
• Rider must be at least 16 years old
• Maximum motor-assisted speed: 20 MPH
• No license, registration, or insurance required
• May ride in bicycle lanes
• Lights required at night
• DUI laws still apply
PennDOT states that Electric Scooters:
This includes many:
• Stand-up e-scooters
• “Blade scooters” with electric motors
• Scooter-style devices without pedals
Residents should carefully understand the difference before operating these devices in public areas.
Parents are encouraged to discuss this law, safe riding habits, helmet use, and traffic safety with their children.
Please see attached info graphics for help in understanding the difference between these devices.
