On March 12th, 2024, at approximately 0245 hours, the Gettysburg Police Department, the Gettysburg Fire Department, and numerous surrounding assisting agencies responded to 64 West Middle Street, Gettysburg Pennsylvania, for a house fire.
The residence was separated into several apartments. Officers and other first responders were able to safely evacuate residents from the first two floor apartments. A single occupant located in the third-floor apartment was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Adams County Coroner’s Office. The fire is believed to have originated on the third floor where the deceased was located.
The deceased will not be named until next of kin can be notified.
The incident is currently being investigated by the Gettysburg Police Department, Fire Marshals with the Pennsylvania State Police and the Adams County Coroners Officer.
Gettysburg Borough had the property evaluated by a structural engineer. The engineer found the property was not structurally sound due to the damage sustained in the fire. Middle Street between Baltimore Street and S. Washington Street will be closed to include the sidewalks in the area until the residence can be made structurally sound. The work to secure and make the property sound has begun but is expected to take a few days.
Approx. 6 to 8 people have been displaced by the fire damage. The Red Cross was contacted by the Fire Company to assist those residents.
